Aftercare

Taking proper care of your tattoo is essential to ensure it heals correctly and looks its best long-term. If not taken care properly, you may experience issues such as fading, scarring, or infection. Follow these guidelines to give your new tattoo the best chance to heal beautifully.

First Day & Night

Keep your bandage on for at least 6 hours—overnight is ideal if it feels comfortable and secure. If you remove it before bed, follow the cleaning steps below.

Some light bleeding is normal and may stick to clothing or bedding. If this happens, gently peel the fabric away—do not force it. Use lukewarm water if needed to loosen it.

Your tattoo may also “weep” (a mix of plasma and excess ink). Simply dab with a clean paper towel— press and lift, don’t wipe. Any visible ink is completely normal.

Tip: Stick to dark clothing and bedding to avoid stains.

Cleaning & Bandage Removal

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
  • Use unscented antibacterial soap (no fragrances or scrubs).
  • Gently remove the bandage—use lukewarm water if it sticks.
  • Lather soap in your hands and clean in soft circular motions.
  • Avoid cloths, sponges, or anything abrasive.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry—never scrub.
  • Allow to air dry for at least 10 minutes.
  • Apply a very thin layer of ointment (Aquaphor or Bacitracin).

Clean your tattoo once daily for the first 2–3 days. No need to re-bandage, but keep it clean and avoid unnecessary contact.

Daily Aftercare

Apply ointment 2–3 times daily for the first 5–7 days. Once peeling begins (similar to a mild sunburn), switch to a fragrance-free lotion for another 2 weeks.

Healing usually takes 2–4 weeks. If irritation or breakouts occur, reduce how often you moisturise.

Itching and light scabbing are normal. Do not pick or scratch, as this can affect healing and pigment. Keep it moisturised and let it heal naturally.

Things to Avoid

  • No swimming, baths, or soaking for at least 2 weeks.
  • Avoid direct sunlight during healing.
  • After healing, always use SPF 50+ on your tattoo.
  • Avoid tight clothing or anything that rubs against the area.

General Tips

Use clean towels, bedding, and clothing throughout the healing process to reduce the risk of infection.
